Tom Strang, prior to joining CCI, was Acting Chief of Conservation at the Provincial Museum of Alberta, and worked on historic site development for Alberta's Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village. He has also assisted with Ontario's Mobile Conservation Laboratory program (which visited many galleries, museums, and historic sites in Ontario) and with on-site conservation during a season of Parks Canada's underwater excavation of a 16th-century Basque whaling galleon off the coast of Red Bay, Labrador. Tom's work for CCI includes developing and reviewing pest control methods in museums, archives, and storage. His research focus is on fumigant replacement technologies using lowered and elevated temperature, and controlled atmosphere fumigation. In addition to writing and lecturing on Integrated Pest Management strategies for collection care, and assisting cultural institutions implement pest management, he works on aspects of preserving natural history collections. Tom has written software for assisting in managing fluid-preserved collections and package design to prevent shock damage, and develops computer tools to assist in research. He has also applied centimetre level GPS mapping and GIS techniques to arctic and petroglyph site recording.
