Heritage Facility Planning

Module Synopsis

This workshop examines the planning and development approaches involved in upgrading or building a heritage facility. Heritage facilities include traditional museums and art galleries as well as archives, libraries, and interpretation centres responsible for collections held in trust or exhibits accessed through loans. Topics covered include collection preservation and security; the physical plant, building envelope, and environmental controls; functional programming; and public access. The workshop also examines the adaptive reuse of existing facilities to respond to changing collection and programming needs and discusses operational resourcing by facility type.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this module, participants will be able to:

  • confirm their current programming and collection preservation profiles
  • resolve appropriate facility and programming upgrades for their facility
  • integrate collection preservation and collection management issues from a strategic plan generated by staff and/or consultants
  • confirm the pathway to improve their ongoing resource needs generated by staff and/or other consultants

Programming Profile Confirmation
Use the market segment based on program selection, revenue generation, and comparative analysis generated by staff and/or other consultants to confirm projections. Refine your programming relevant to your market segment and outreach targets.

Collection Preservation Profile Definition
Define your collection needs through a preservation survey. Resolve collection demands resulting from a programming definition generated by staff and/or other consultants. Establish design standards for collections preservation planning including environmental and security requirements. Upgrade collection preservation to reflect current museological practices.

Facility Operational Profile Definition
Define your facility needs through a facility survey. Resolve facility upgrades resulting from the various surveys. Establish design standards for facility upgrading. Upgrade facility.

Strategic Plan and Financing
Review the integrated programming, collection preservation, and facility profiles and revise the strategic plan generated. Confirm the operating and capital cost scenarios generated in this workshop.

Target Audience

Anyone planning or beginning a capital upgrading or purpose-build heritage facility project including museum, art gallery, archives, and library executive officers and their staff as well as project managers and development officers.
